“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
These words capture my imagination for what it means to be alive. Like many others, I sometimes consider myself as having a “spiritual side,” or I think about spirituality as it’s simply a facet of my being. But what if we are not physical human begins having (or not having) spiritual experiences? What if instead we are spiritual beings living into a physical reality? Putting it another way, C. S. Lewis once famously said, “You don’t have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.” How might this understanding of our being a soul and not having a soul affect our lives?
This Sunday at Farm Church we’re going to talk about matters of body and spirit. In the gospel of John, a man named Nicodemus finds Jesus in the night to ask him about matters of body and spirit. Jesus’ words to him offer insight for us today as we bring spiritual perspective to our thinking.
Oh, and we’ll start in the soil! So dress appropriately. Hope to see you this Sunday morning!
